Description

In rundem Bildausschnitt Interieur, mittig kniet Conrad in theaterhafter Tracht nach Mode des 17. Jahrhunderts nieder und ergreift die Hand der rechts stehenden Bertha. Links ihre Mutter, die Arme ausbreitend, einen Brief in der Rechten haltend. Reich und weich nuancierte Darstellung.

Inscription

Bezeichnet: Gestochen unter der Drst. li. "W. Hamilton pinxit.", re. "J.M. Delattre sculpsit.", darunter zentriert "SORROWS OF WERTER: / Conrade was kneeling at Bertha's Feet - who woth a timid Air had given Him her Hand, whilst / the Mother (Mrs. Menheil) stood before Them, and with a Look of the utmost Tenderness, bent rather forward, / with her Arms extended, as if to embrace Them both in the Attitude They were then in. / Eleanora: from the Sorrows of Werter: a Tale. Vol 2. Pa. 133. / Publicated according to Act, January 5. 1788, by Ann Bryer, No. 5, Poland Street, Soho. Verso beschriftet in Bleistift: "vgl. Eleonora From the Sorrows of Werter/ a Tale / ll. ed. London 1785 / Teil II P. 133 / = Inv. Nr. 37806= III E 47 / d 41".
